The quiet beauty of our easternly forests is a gift meant to be accessible to all. That’s what makes Alderbrook Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary so special.

Located just south of Northfield center on Route 63, Alderbrook Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary is a 5-acre Conservation Area of mature forest along a beaver impounded wetland that is home to a diverse array of birds and other wildlife. Meandering past this lively wetland and through a towering grove of white pines is the Gunnery Sergeant Jeffrey S. Ames Accessible Nature Trail – an accessible trail that allows folks of all ages and abilities to immerse themselves within this beautiful landscape.

History of the Property

For many years, deedholders Bill and Nancy Ames have hosted nature walks on their land, welcoming groups like the Scouts and the New England Wildflower Society. They permanently conserved most of their 142-acre property through a conservation restriction and generously donated 5 acres of woods and wetlands — now home to the Ames Accessible Nature Trail — to Mount Grace.

“We have about 3/4 of a mile of hayfield edge - that marvelous habitat between forest and field, protection and exposure. There are shrubs, bushes, and wildflowers in this narrow and magical space. Mammals and birds rest and forage and have safety close at hand. This alone is worth protecting.” — Bill Ames

About the Gunnery Sergeant Jeffrey S. Ames Accessible Nature Trail

The Ames Accessible Nature Trail, the sole path on the property, stretches for half a mile and is accessible to both wheelchairs and strollers. To enhance your experience, Mount Grace has placed benches along the trail. The observation deck offers stunning views of the wetland, making it a perfect spot for wildlife and birdwatching.
